History of the Centre

 

1983     

The Centre For Molecular Biology and Medicine was founded by Professor A. W. Linnane, at the Department of Biochemistry, Monash University with the objective of creating a dynamic interactive environment for pursuing research in basic biological sciences side by side with goal-oriented strategic research and the active development of commercial and medical applications.

 

1984     

Formation of the Board of Management with Sir Brian Inglis, AC as Chairman.  Founding members included Sir Charles McGrath (chairman 3 months, deceased), John C Habersberger, AO, A.H Royce Abbey, A.M., Bruce S. Gadsen, J. Charles Trethowan, A.M., Hugh T. Rogers, A.M., Edward S. Churchill, Raymond L. Martin, AO, and Professor Barry G. Firkin.

 

1991   

The Centre for Molecular Biology and Medicine Foundation was formed for the sole purpose of providing funds towards the Centre’s research activities.

 

1993   

The Centre received Victorian Government Department of Health Medical Infrastructure support.

 

1994   

The Centre acquired its own stand alone building refurbished and equipped by grants from the H&L Hecht Trust and the Federal Government. Premier Kennett officially opened the newly refurbished building.

 

1996   

The Centre was Incorporated as a not-for-profit organization on 29 October 1996.   Separation from Monash University with transfer of patents, intellectual property, equipment and furnishings to the Centre.   The Centre was temporarily housed at the Austin and Repatriation Medical Centre (formerly Department of Medicine, University of Melbourne).

 

1997    

Refurbishment of permanent offices and laboratories at the Epworth Hospital Medical Centre on the corner of Bridge Road and Hoddle Street, Richmond, was completed at the end of October 1997.   This construction of laboratories was funded by Monash University.   The Centre has entered into a close relationship with Epworth Hospital, which generously provided the building for use by the Centre.   The facilities were officially opened by the Honorable Mr. Robert Knowles, Minister for Health, on 22nd October 1997.

 

1998   

The equipping and staffing of the Centre has been aggressively pursued.  our present future is directed towards excellence in our goal oriented research endeavors into the aging process and gastro-intestinal cancer.
